Delegation to India
The ACCC delegation to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI) annual conference on education, Learner First, was the largest of any country. Chair Ann Buller and CEO James Knight were accompanied by representatives of eight member institutions. India has announced a pilot program to create 100 community colleges as part of its ten year plan to bring education and skills to 500,000,000 citizens. Senior Indian officials with both central and state governments invited Canada’s support. Two India/Canada working groups are in place. The delegation visited New Delhi, Chandigarh in the State of Punjab and Cochin in the State of Kerala. Canadian High Commission and consular offices provided tireless support. The mission reviewed ACCC’s Student Partners Program with senior immigration officials who reported that they expect to issue 14,000 visas this year for students wishing to study in Canadian colleges.
Immigrant Integration Symposium
Ninety participants from colleges, institutes, partners and government attended the ACCC Symposium, Colleges and Institutes: Supporting the Integration of Immigrants into the Canadian Labour Market, September 17 – 19, 2012. Deputy Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Neil Yeates, delivered the opening keynote highlighting emergent policy and program developments.
Update on Copyright
Attempts to develop jointly a survey instrument between ACCC and Access Copyright have resulted in an impasse. On September 7, the Copyright Board of Canada ruled that ACCC may conduct its own survey.
In August, Access Copyright filed a motion with the Copyright Board to require institutions, which have not signed the model licence, to answer the nine interrogatories held in abeyance since June 6, 2011. ACCC filed objections and we await the Copyright Board's decision.
On August 30, a fair dealing policy and an opinion letter from legal counsel were distributed to members. ACCC will hold copyright workshops this fall covering implementation of the fair dealing policy, the application of the July Supreme Court of Canada ruling on fair dealing, and the Copyright Modernization Act. Copyright Law for Education in 2012 workshops will be held in Toronto November 12; Halifax November 14; Ottawa November 26; Calgary November 29; and Vancouver December 6.
Friend-raising and Fundraising Symposium
Colleges and institutes have been involved in the area of friend-raising, advancement and fundraising since their creation. With government funding cutbacks, limited resources and ageing infrastructure, institutions are looking to enhance their approaches and results. The Friend-raising and Fundraising Symposium will include sessions on: relationship building, engaging alumni, senior management leadership, roles of college and foundation boards, philanthropic trends, and fundraising mechanisms. The Symposium will take place October 29-30 at the Sheraton on the Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
