Purpose of the project

The primary purpose of this project is to establish a network for exchange and innovation on Essential Skills (ES), providing fast access to ES resources and stimulating the creation of missing tools and resources.

Project activities

This two-year project began on February 1 2006 and ended on March 31 2008. It consisted of three main components:

  1. Establishing a national steering committee consisting of representatives from a lead college in each ACCC region and representatives of industry partners. The committee members advise the ACCC management team on project activities.

  2. Creating a classification system of ES resources through a systematic survey of tools and current practices. The most useful and accessible resources for teachers, learners, employers and employees will be identified.

  3. Developing a network of college participants using an ES Website. The site will facilitate dialogue between participants on the best practices and tools. It will also allow them to share their ES assessment tools, programs and experiences. The site will include a virtual library of ES resources, links to other relevant sites and a forum for exchange and cooperation.

Results achieved

  • A network for exchange and innovation in ES has been established;

  • A classified inventory of ES programs, approaches, tools and experiences has been created;

  • More than half of Canada's 150 colleges and institutes are taking ES into greater consideration in their institutional policies, programs, training material and assessment tools;

  • Canada's workforce has gained an easier access to the best existing resources in the field of ES.

  • The executive summary of the project's final report is now available - the executive summary includes the report's conclusions and recommendations.
