Colleges Recognized in Federal Budget
In a time of fiscal restraint, the federal government listened. The role of colleges, institutes and polytechnics in advancing Canada’s innovation capacity was recognized in the federal budget with the doubling of the funding for the College and Community Innovation Program (CCIP). We were pleased to see the following text in the budget document:
"Colleges make important contributions to advancing Canada’s innovation capacity by working with businesses and playing a key role in translating knowledge into practical applications that open new markets and create high-value jobs. The applied research and training capacity at colleges and polytechnics is a tremendous resource for building a more knowledge-driven economy. Our 150 colleges and polytechnics, with locations in over 1,000 communities, are uniquely placed to work with businesses and industries to address real-life market needs and opportunities."
Other funding envelopes available to colleges were also supported. We will continue to share details as we learn more about the specifics.

Faculty from Two Colleges Receive NSERC Funding
Congratulations to Dr. Ron Currie of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and Louis Tessier of Collège Shawinigan, who received $125,000 each under NSERC’s Idea to Innovation (I2I) program. Dr. Currie’s research project will focus on making faster gas chromatography analyses that report the concentration of compounds that are present over a very wide range. Current technology is incapable of achieving this. Mr. Tessier intends to develop an innovative bioprocess for the production and purification of an ecological biosurfactant for industrial applications. These are the first colleges to receive funding under the I2I program since its inception in 2004.
ACCC in the News
The Globe and Mail Report on Colleges was published February 22, and featured profiles of member institutions. A conversation with ACCC President and CEO James Knight was also included.
