CIC Expands CIIP
On February 18, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced the expansion of the Canadian Immigration Integration Project. ACCC will receive an additional $15 million in funding over the next three years to expand services in India, China and the Philippines, as well as open an office in London, England to serve various Nordic and Arab states. ACCC Gets New Project in Essential Skills
Human Resources and Social Development Canada has awarded ACCC another essential skills project. The three-year, $4.8 million Essential Skills National Approach: Seeking Harmony While Respecting Diversity project will develop a systemic, harmonized and adaptable approach to essential skills integration for colleges and their partners.
Parliament May be Prorogued, But Advocacy Efforts Continue
Both the Conservative and Liberal Parties have used the downtime resulting from the prorogation to consult with individuals and organizations. Several presidents have reported meetings with Finance Minister Flaherty, Science and Technology Minister Goodyear, and Industry Minister Clement, all of whom are critical to the ACCC advocacy agenda. The Liberal Party invited us to a series of roundtables on themes that have included rural development, the economy and post-secondary education. With the Speech from the Throne scheduled for March 3, and the federal budget for March 4, we will soon know the results of our collective efforts.
ACCC Releases Research Report
On February 11, ACCC released Partnerships for Productivity and Advanced Skills: The Role of Colleges in Canada’s Innovation System. A summary of the survey on applied research activity at member institutions, the report found that private sector investment in college applied research increased ten-fold over the last three years, with 3,602 companies partnering with colleges. Over 100 institutions promote applied research services through their websites, and 67 have a dedicated applied research division or unit. Click here to view the full report.
Changes to College Education in New Brunswick
The New Brunswick Community Colleges Act was introduced into the legislature on February 9 to establish two autonomous, multi-campus English and French community colleges, each with its own board of governors and president/CEO. The institutions will be student-focused and their programs will target the employment market.
