Canadian Colleges and Institutes Partnering
to Help American Colleagues in the Aftermath
of Hurricane Katrina
Ottawa, September 14, 2005 -
The member institutions of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) have risen to the challenge
to assist the U.S. colleges and their students affected by Hurricane
Katrina.
ACCC member institutions have stepped forward
with offers ranging from assistance with fundraising through
the Katrina College Assistance Fund to free tuition, waiving
of international student fees, billeting arrangements, and other.
ACCC is collaborating with its counterpart organization, the
American Association of Community Colleges, which is mobilizing
efforts stateside to ensure effective distribution of the funds
raised.
“When a disaster of this magnitude
strikes, the community oriented nature of our institutions makes
them very sensitive to the impact on their counterparts. Our
colleges and institutes have once again risen to the challenge,
organizing fundraising activities and offering spaces and support
to affected faculty and students,” said Gerald Brown,
President, Association of Canadian Community Colleges.
ACCC is also collaborating with the Department
of Foreign Affairs to identify the capacity and interest of
its member institutions in offering assistance to students and
faculty displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
The Association of Canadian Community Colleges
(ACCC) is the national and international voice of over 150 colleges
and institutes. For more information on ACCC, visit www.accc.ca.
