Environment and Sustainability Initiatives in
Canadian Colleges and Institutes

Raising awareness and leading by example are essential to a more sustainable future.  While Canada is a country rich in natural resources, action is needed for their protection and renewal.  Canada’s colleges and institutes are rising to the challenge, with initiatives both big and small, such as:

  • Incorporating sustainability principles in vision statements, missions, core values, strategic plans, priorities, policies, operations, procurement strategies

  • Encouraging their staff and students to become eco-conscious citizens and agents for change in their communities through on-campus initiatives such as recycling, promoting the use of mugs, biodegradable plates, green cleaning products

  • Establishing environmental committees with representation from across the college/institute

  • Incorporating green technologies in campus buildings

  • Providing training in the areas of environmental technology and protection, renewable energy technologies, natural resources technology, land and water management, ecosystem management, green architecture, green business management, sustainable energy and building technology, wildlife conservation

  • Carrying out green audits, awareness campaigns and campus-wide recycling and waste reduction initiatives
